These are synchronization, phonebook, calender, text message, Multimedia Studio, and Internet connection. As this is an intensive program, it is still probably a good idea to install Mobile Phone Tools 4 to a fresh install of Windows before any Microsoft updates have been made - if you don't already have a previous version installed and running properly. Windows XP Service Pack updates are notorious for preventing the proper install of many softwares now, including antivirus or any other program designed to interact with Windows features such as Outlook. This is not limited to the software of other vendors, but some of Microsoft's own programs. For example, a licensed install of the older Microsoft Works 2000 must be painfully broken down using the explore feature to individually copy files before it will install if the current Windows updates are installed. Before all of XP's Service Pack updates, this same program was never a problem to install on Windows XP. Once you have a properly functioning version of Motorola Phone Tools installed, Motorola Mobile Phone Tools 4 is an excellent tool in your inventory that will install without a hitch. Synchronization: Synchronization offers a suite of five options with multiple categories under each. These are Welcome, Sync, Backup/Restore, PhoneBook, and Calender. Each of these five Suites offers a number of actions to take. For example, under "Welcome" the following options are provided: Synchronization Synchronize your PC contacts and calendar with your phone. Motorola Phone Tools works with Outlook, Outlook Express or Lotus Notes Backup/Restore Backup or restore your phone's Contact and Calendar data at any time Phonebook Use the Phonebook to manually manage or edit your contacts on your phone and PC. Calendar Use the Calendar to manually manage or edit your appointments on your phone and PC. Undeer "Sync" you will find: Synchronize now Modify the synchronization settings Start the synchronization wizard Learn more about synchronization With "Backup/Restore" you have these options: Backup Backup your phone's Contact and Calendar data. Restore Restore your phone's Contact and Calendar data. (Note: The actual content of your phone will be replaced with the content of the backup you choose.) Delete data from your mobile phone Learn more about Backup/Restore Clicking on "PhoneBook" will produce a window with four panes and a timeout asking you to wait a few moments until the phones memory and SIM are read. The top left pane displays contacts saved to your computer and the one below it displays all information for the highlighted contact above (numbers, email addresses). The right top pane displays the contacts on your phone with the lower one showing information for the one highlighted above for the phone. "Calender" will produce a similar window to that of "PhoneBook", but will allow you to find your saved phone notes by date on the computer on the left, or those on the phone at the right hand panes. "Text Message" brings up a window that will allow you to write and send a text message from your computer using your connected phone. (carrier dependent subscription feature) "Internet Connection" allows you to connect your computer to the Internet using your phone. This can be done using a number on your computer or the one used by your phone. (carrier dependent subscription feature) Saving the more frivolous feature for last, is the "Multimedia Studio" feature. This is also the one some service providers disable on their phone's internal software as they want to charge for all ringtones and other media on those phones. So you may want to check to see if computer ringtones transfer has been disabled using some freeware - if this is the only feature you're interested in. (Cingular always leaves this feature on their phones intact) "Multimedia Studio" has the five following choices available: File Transfer Studio Transfer your photos, videos and ringtones to your PC and vice versa with the File Transfer Studio Image Studio Edit pictures and use them as wallpapers and screensavers with the Image Studio Melody Studio Edit your favorite music files or audio CD tracks and use them as ringtones with the Melody Studio Video Studio Compose video with sound and titles and transfer them to your mobile device with the Video Studio MMS Studio Compose multimedia messages with pictures, sounds and titles and send them to your friends with the MMS Studio By using whichever connection type allowed, (infrared, Bluetooth, or USB) your phone is easily connected to your computer using Avanquest's Motorola Phone Tools 4. This allows phones such as the RAZR and PEBL to charge while they are connected using USB, while they are in use with your computer. What I'll tell you now is that use is not limited by what I've already said above. You will also be able to answer and place calls through your computer while busy with other tasks. This also includes sending and receiving email, text, and multimedia messages using your computer connected phone. So why not connect your phone to the computer you're busy using and no longer worry with stopping to find or fumble with your phone to make or answer a call - when you can do it from your workstation, desktop, or laptop. Multiple phone messages will also be easier to send. Drawbacks: Some update downloads can be large in the 20 Mb. size for dial-up connections. The new Internet update from Version 3 to Version 4 is well above this at around 50 Mb. Windows Service Pack updates can interfere with a first time install of Mobile Phone Tools. This may require the user to do a fresh install of Windows without Service Packs, then installing Mobile Phone Tools before installing Windows updates, to get a proper fully functioning install of Mobile Phone Tools. Final Impression: Earlier, I complained about the ease of the installation of version 3.0, but with Microsofts continued OS changes to XP it is readily seen that no one providing software that interfaces with the big M has a chance. As soon as they make a repair - Microsoft is defeating it with new Service Packs that make no distinction in software by other than themselves. Motorola did make changes in their software and FTP servers to benefit customers, but Microsoft is continuing their often obtuse changes under the guise of "security" improvements. I'll be interested in seeing what garbage they will install to VISTA. If it continues, I may convert to LINUX! So far, Microsoft has drifted farther and farther to the left, making promises they don't seem to intend to keep, sticking up for the RIAA, and you might now note they provide Windows One Care - which does perform well, but is obviously to provide competition to the others in this field. The handwriting was on the wall with XP's Service Pack 2 when it provided firewall protection. So far, the Service Packs are allowing continued operation of previously installed software - but this too may only be a question of time. The worst attacks on my computers have been directed from Microsoft. Despite the two drawbacks (not the fault of the software), I still recommend Motorola Mobile Phone Tools for what it is fully capable of doing. Once installed properly, it is trouble free and works flawlessly. Earlier server update problems, I noted in my review of Motorola Mobile Phone Tools 3.0, have now been corrected and the free upgrade from Motorola to 4.06b was appreciated. It added a nicer look to the interface and simplified the user controls, also adding automatic update checking. Version 4.06b has now been on my computers for months, performing all tasks properly just as my earlier 3.0 install did. The major difference, other than the new look and controls, is faster loading of the program when I activate it and shutdown when I close it. This is a good, inexpensive, and viable software I'm glad
